data-mm-id=”_jp91018ge”>Seymour Siwoff, the longtime owner of the Elias Sports Bureau, died at the age of 99, the company announced:This afternoon the Elias family lost its visionary leader. Seymour Siwoff passed away at the age of 99. Seymour is a legend who transformed the company into what it is today.— Elias Sports Bureau (@EliasSports) November 29, 2019It's hard to overstate how significant Elias Sports Bureau is in the way we all watch, read, and learn about sports. Any time you hear something like, "Lamar Jackson is the first player in NFL HISTORY with four TD passes and at least 50 yards rushing in consecutive games," there's a high probability that stat originated with Elias. (This one indeed did.) My father went to Wesleyan University with Chris Thorn, who advanced Elias's computerization in the 1970s, and so I was lucky enough to meet Siwoff in his office a few times. He went to work well into his 90s — as you can see up top, he was literally card carrying member no. 1 of the Baseball Writers Association of America. Who gets that honor now? Roger Angell, probably?. [Update: Sid Hartman will now have that honor, per Jack O'Connell of the BBWAA.] Me, my Dad, + Seymour Siwoff, head of Elias Sports Bureau. pic.twitter.com/hbXceHzDO4— Ryan Glasspiegel (@sportsrapport) August 29, 2015When I was first starting out in this profession, he advised against it, but stressed that if I did it I "had to have an angle." I think about this advice all the time in covering sports media, a niche where there is much more public interest especially in the tentpole stars than there is coverage. Siwoff, who fought in World War II as an infantryman and was awarded a Purple Heart, was profiled by Sports Illustrated over 50 years ago, in 1969, as an "answer man" for various newspapers seeking statistical context. His angle grew immensely, approaching 360 degrees. Today, Elias is the official statistician of the NFL, MLB, NBA, NHL, WNBA, and MLS. They also supply networks including ESPN, NFL Network, Turner Sports, and the Comcast RSNs with stats. The business adapted with the advents of television and the internet and remains relevant and even indispensable to this day.

Liverpool have a steep hill to climb in their second-leg clash with Real Madrid in the Champions League quarterfinals which is being played on Wednesday at Anfield. The Spanish giants won the first leg last week at the Alfredo Di Stefano stadium by 3-1, courtesy of a brace from Vinicius Junior and a strike from Marco Asensio in between, along with Mohamed Salah scoring the only goal for the Premier League champions.
Liverpool
Much has been said about the season Liverpool have had so far, particularly in terms of the injury crisis that has hit their back line pretty hard. Virgil van Dijk, Joe Gomez and Joel Matip have all been ruled out for the rest of the campaign, as has captain Jordan Henderson in midfield.

Argentina qualified for the Copa America quarter-finals after ending their drought against Paraguay with a 1-0 victory.
Not since the 2015 Copa had Argentina tasted a win over Paraguay – a run of four consecutive matches – but La Albiceleste snapped that winless streak thanks to Papu Gomez on Monday.
Gomez scored the winner in the 10th minute, scooping an effort over onrushing Paraguay goalkeeper Antony Silva, for his second goal from just his sixth international appearance.
As Lionel Messi equalled the record for most Argentina appearances, Lionel Scaloni s men extended their winning streak to 16 games in Brasilia.
Angel Di Maria and Sergio Aguero were named in the starting XI for the first time during this year s Copa, and the veteran Argentina pair…

Data released by the Football Association on Wednesday showed the 53 clubs signed up to the Football Leadership Diversity Code (FLDC) collectively failed to meet any of the eight hiring targets set last season.
The FA board has now approved the creation of a new rule which will make clubs publicly declare their workforce diversity data on age, sex, gender, ethnicity, disability and sexual orientation twice a year from 2024-25.
We have today published the third annual report on the Football Leadership Diversity Code, committing to mandatory diversity reporting.

Value betting is a strategy where you calculate the actual probability or likelihood of an event occurring. Next, you compare the probability with the odds a bookmaker gives to determine if the odds are higher and more profitable. This will help you determine whether the odds are in your favor.
A great example of a rare case of a value bet that bookmakers underestimated is the Euro 2016 Final. France was listed as the favorite to win the final against Portugal. France had odds of +105, Portugal +350, and the draw had odds of +220.
Daman Chick, a punter from the United Kingdom and an avid football fan, wagered £5 on Portugal to win. He correctly predicted the goalscorer and the minute of the goal. Betting a small amount on Portugal to win at +350 odds, as well as the add…
Jarell Quansah is relishing playing alongside Virgil van Dijk in Liverpool’s defence in a breakthrough season he admits has “exceeded all expectations”.
Twenty-one-year-old Reds academy product Quansah, who was on loan at Bristol Rovers last season, came off the bench to make his Liverpool first-team debut in August.
He has played a further 24 times for the Merseysiders in all competitions, and started each of the last four games, including the 1-1 Premier League draw with Manchester City and 4-3 FA Cup quarter-final loss at Manchester United, partnering Van Dijk at centre-back in both matches.
Quansah – also a League Cup winner in the past few weeks – has been referred to as “Virgil 2.0” by Liverpool boss Jurgen Klopp, and the England Under-21 inte…
